We’ve all seen the “detail” pictures, or what we in the industry like to call ‘flatlays’. They are usually photos of your wedding’s paper goods, your accessories, etc. Flatlay details set the tone for the wedding in your albums (digitally or printed), so you can always cherish those little details. These are usually things your photographer will make sure you have prepped ahead of time, but we also like to remind our couples as well. These are the pretty things that photographers love to play with and get creative while styling!
We typically see the invitation showcased in Flatlay details photos. Do not forget to order extra copies of them to be able to provide your photographer, as well as for your family’s keepsakes. These precious papers are often accessorized with your ring (show off that ring, girl!) in a gorgeous ring holder (our favorites are from the Mrs. Box), bracelet, earrings, necklace, etc. Some other bridal details that are included could be your veil, your garter, a broach to go on your bouquet, anything that can add dimension to the photos. This is a great place to put your ‘something borrowed, something blue’ as well!
Flatlay details can be as elaborate or simple as you’d like, depending on how many details you have. Your photographer usually has some pieces in their kit that they can accent with, such as ribbon or lace, stamps or wax seals. Our pro tip is to have your florist deliver your personal florals by this time, and make sure they include a few extra pieces for the photographer to incorporate into the flatlay as well. This can be loose blooms, sprigs of greenery-anything really!
We always build into our timelines time for these photos to be styled, so it doesn’t look as though some papers and jewelry were thrown together on the floor. Photographers sometimes have their own boards or backdrops they prefer to use, or can use whatever is in your getting ready space too! If these photos are important to you, you’ll want to discuss this ahead of time with your photographer to make sure there is enough time and space for them to ‘play with the pretty things’.
Flatlay details photos are some of our favorites wedding photos, and your stationer will certainly appreciate them as well! We hope you got some good tips on what to include in them and some inspiration from some of our favorite designers!
