You’re engaged and planning a wedding, yay! This is such an exciting time and your to-do list just got 100 times longer. One thing that most couples do early on in their planning is an engagement session. So, we’re here to give you a little bit of Engagement Session advice, from a planner’s perspective.
One of the first things you book after getting engaged is your venue. Next, a lot of couples choose to book their caterer or photographer. Most photographers include an engagement session in their packages, and with good reason! Chances are, you likely have not taken professional photos with your significant other before. This is the perfect opportunity to get some practice in before the wedding day (and have a little fun while you’re at it ;)). Photographers we work with can give you more advice than this, but we wanted to weigh in on some of the important factors we see while you plan your engagement session.
Personalities
This one is obvious, but you want your personalities to show through your photos! It’s a time to have a little fun in front of the camera with your best friend. You want to look & feel beautiful and comfortable and it will show in your photos. Often, photographers will joke with you to make your genuine smiles show in what they capture, which make the photos so worth it!
Location
This piece of Engagement Session advice is so important. Pick a place that will showcase your personalities or get the vibe across you want to portray. Do you both frequent trendy coffee shops on the weekends? Why not take your engagement photos there, where you are totally comfortable! Do you like the outdoors? Include a cute picnic (must have champagne!) in your session. Do you like the cityscape or going Downtown? Hit up your favorite landmarks or bars during your session. Your photographer would love to capture you in an environment you’re already comfortable with.
Wardrobe
Being comfortable is key. If you are normally not in a dress and heels, don’t feel pressured to wear that! The most important this of this Engagement Session advice is to make sure you and your significant other’s outfits are cohesive. You don’t want to be matchy-matchy, but also do not want to clash. Pick colors or soft prints that compliment each other, make you feel comfortable and will look good in the environment you choose (i.e. don’t wear black if taking your photos in a dark setting).
We hope you got something out of these small tidbits of Engagement Session advice. Be sure to ask your photographers for more tips they can offer you and don’t forget to HAVE FUN! We love getting these photos from our couples, seeing them on their wedding websites or Save the Dates!
