Your First Dance at your wedding is one of the most anticipated moments of the entire day. Sharing a dance as a newly married couple is such a special time, and your guests love to witness it. Whether you do your First Dance right when you enter your reception, or wait until after your dinner, there is much more to consider than just dancing with your new spouse!
First things first, we always hear from couples “well, I don’t want that much attention on me!”. Fear not, friends! This is where you can fade your song early, and not have to worry about all those eyes on you for 3-4 minutes. Simply talk to your DJ or entertainment company about this option. We say 2 minutes is the sweet spot for any kind of formality dance, as it gives just enough time to capture the moment and enjoy it!
We are always telling couples to not underestimate choosing their First Dance song. It can be a lot more difficult than you think! If you don’t have a “song”, then there are endless possibilities. YouTube is a good resource, or again, talk to your DJ for some common recommendations. You want to make sure you choose something that represents the two of you (genre, artist you love) and that you will still love every time you hear your song come on.
Once you have selected your song and might cut it short, you’ll want to think of if you’ll take dance lessons or not. This is not for every couple, but we have been seeing more and more couples take that extra time to have a choreographed routine. If you are the nervous type and worry about remembering steps, then maybe this isn’t the option for you. But, it is some added time you get to spend together during the planning process and something new to experience together!
The last tip we have for your First Dance is to consider any enhancements or special effects to add. This can mean spark boxes, dancing on a cloud, special lighting, live artist-you name it! There are ways to enhance your moment without stealing it from you. If you are not a showy person and just want to embrace the moment, then you might want to skip this step. We are seeing spark boxes and dancing on a cloud quite often nowadays, as they make for that magical wow factor for you & your guests to experience together! Bonus-it also makes for great photos.
Remember that whatever song, enhancements or length of time you have for your First Dance, that it is your first dance and yours only. It’s such a special moment on your wedding day that you will cherish forever as a married couple!
