One of the most underrated parts of the wedding planning process is How to Choose Wedding Songs. We highly suggest that couples give a lot of effort (& not leave this to the last minute!) into selecting their wedding music.
When it comes to choosing your wedding songs, you will likely tell your DJ or band general lists of songs that you love, songs that you do not want to be played and genres that you and your guests enjoy. Then, there’s the entire aspect of selecting all of your special song choices for the formalities throughout the night.
Ceremony Music
Imagining what your family, friends and you are walking down the aisle to is no easy task! We always tell clients to go with songs that they feel a connection with. There is no right or wrong choice here, but we can guide you on How to Choose Wedding Songs. You can go the traditional route for your ceremony music (Canon in D, Wedding March, etc) or more modern with your Ed Sheeran or John Legend. We see a good mix of these two for a lot of couples, by choosing instrumental versions of modern love songs. Your ceremony songs should be meaningful, including your recessional song, where you can choose something a bit more upbeat!
Special Moments
Once you’re in your reception, there are a lot of special moments that occur throughout the night. First Dance, Parent Dances and Cake Cutting are a few of them that you should choose a song for each. Your first dance as a married couple is one of the most special moments you’ll experience throughout the night (besides the ceremony of course!). It’s a moment you share together, and the rest of the world seems like a blur. Most couples have a shortlist of contending songs for this, but choose one that means the most to you at the time of the wedding and for years to come! We suggest involving your parents in How to Choose Wedding Songs for the parent dances they share with you, and picking something “sweet” (pun intended) for the cake cutting 😉
Let’s Party!
This is the more general portion of the evening, but you have to work with your music provider to craft the perfect playlist for all of your guests to enjoy! We like to see a good mix of music that appeals to older guests earlier in the evening, and as the party goes on, music can progress into more modern tastes. We love seeing couples incorporate fun choreographed moments or group dances into their reception, too! This is a fun way to show off some dance skills you might have been working on all along or to just reenact your favorite movie dance.
How to Choose Wedding Songs is somewhat of a daunting task, but can be fun as well. Take your time with your future spouse, sit down with a glass of wine and listen to all kinds of songs on YouTube, Spotify, etc. It will come to you guys naturally and you’ll know when you hear the ones!
