Vendor Spotlight: Maitland Art Center
The Maitland Art Center is a beautiful museum that has hosted many gorgeous weddings! A true hidden gem in Central Florida. Our team has been lucky enough to be apart of some really wonderful weddings in this fabulous location {including a celebrity wedding!} and we are looking forward to many more. This month we had the opportunity to get to know Kelly, the Rental Manager for the facility and learn more about it, here is what we found out:
How long has the museum/art center been open? What is the history behind the Mayan style of it?
- “The A&H’s Maitland Art Center, originally known as the Research Studio, was founded in 1937 by visionary artist and architect J. André Smith. The center originally operated as a winter artist’s colony, dedicated to fostering an exploratory approach to modern art. The hundreds of original sculptural elements that adorn the structures were hand-carved by André Smith and his associates, and the center remains one of the few surviving examples of Mayan Revival architecture in the southeastern United States.”
What are the benefits of a wedding in your space?
- “The A&H’s Maitland Art Center is Central Florida’s only National Historic Landmark, and one of only twelve landmarks in the state that host private events. One of the benefits of hosting your special day at the A&H is the site’s rich history. Weddings have been held in the Chapel and Mayan Courtyard since the 1940’s, and couples frequently return to our grounds to enjoy a picnic in our gardens, take an art class, or tour our museums. There is a very special history here that can’t be replicated anywhere else.”
What should the client expect when booking your team?
- “We pride ourselves on superior customer service. We are available for questions by phone or email, and are happy to schedule tours of the venues that allow our couples to gain insight into the history of our grounds, as well as help them realize their unique vision for the space. On the day of the event, I or one of our rental attendants will be there to make sure the venue is show-ready, and assist with any questions throughout the event. Attendants also carry a cell phone to call/text should the couple or their vendors need any assistance during event hours.”
Are there exhibits open during events/can guests have access to other parts of the museum?
- “While the Maitland Art Center Gallery is not open during private events, guests may choose to book additional time for photos in our historic venues. If renting the Main Garden, guests will have access to the original Research Studio grounds, where the artists would live and work during the time period that the center operated as a winter artists’ colony. Because these studios are still in use today, guests may even be able to glimpse local artists at work.”
What items are included in the rental of the space?
- “All our wedding rentals include a 1-hour complimentary rehearsal, indoor restrooms, and plenty of electrical outlets. Each indoor facility will include a variety of tables and chairs, and a small prep kitchen complete with fridge/freezer, sink, and ample counter space.”
What are some important facts about each the rental spaces, capacity, starting price, etc?

What is your favorite wedding trend at the moment or a trend that worked well in this space?
“I love seeing weddings that are a true representation of the couple. When greenery was announced as Pantone’s color of the year for 2017, we saw a lot of exposed wood, moss greenery, and rose gold/blush color tones. I even had a wedding where the bride’s father built a custom arch from trees on their family’s property! The combination was so whimsical and dreamy in our Main Garden venue. This Spring I also saw a lot of pops of color in our Chapel and Mayan Courtyard, colors like aqua and crushed berry, were really popular and stood out against the hand carved concrete artwork in the venue. I’m excited to see what trends 2018 brings!”
